Before we get started, it should be noted that this thorough scientific analysis is based on Brisbane public holidays and accounts for people working a full-time Monday to Friday job. Part-timers and shift workers – you'll have to work out how to best hack your own leave.
Summer holidays
Public holidays: Monday 27 January (Australia Day) 2025
Days to take annual leave: Tuesday 28 January, Wednesday 29 January, Thursday 30 January, and Friday 31 January 2025
Using four days of annual leave days earns you a nine-day long weekend, what a way to start the new year. There’s a lot you can squeeze into nine days, especially when the summer sun is shining brightly!
Where to go: You might just be coming off the back of big travels from Christmas, so let's keep things local and check out some green getaways in Queensland's backyard.
Easter adventure
Public holidays: Friday 18 April (Good Friday), Monday 21 April (Easter Monday) 2025, and Friday 25 April (ANZAC Day)
Days to take annual leave: Tuesday 22 April, Wednesday 23 April, and Thursday 24 April 2025
With the Easter long weekend and ANZAC Day falling so close together in 2025, you only need three annual leave days to take a 10-day holiday.
Where to go: If you're looking to escape overseas for your 10-day adventure, consider heading over to Bangkok to explore a city and culture that is teaming with life, flavour and history – you'll find the world's best Pad Thai while you're there.
Post-Easter getaway

Days to take annual leave: Tuesday 6 May, Wednesday 7 May, Thursday 8 May, and Friday 9 May 2025
If you were left craving another nine-day break from work, then you're in luck. Thanks to Labour Day you can turn four days of annual leave into another nine-day holiday.
Where to go: Who said that you need to head overseas to enjoy your holiday when there is so much in our own backyard to see. Why not head down south to NSW and check out the Blue Mountains, offering a plethora of hikes and bushwalks with stunning scenery. In winter, the dew glistens in the evening sunlight and is softly filtered through the winter mist to create a serene atmosphere in the mountainscape.
The People’s Day Week
Public holiday: Wednesday 13 August (Royal Queensland Show) 2025 (Brisbane only)
Days to take annual leave: Monday 11 August, Tuesday 12 August, Thursday 14 August, and Friday 15 August 2025
There are public holiday show days throughout the year in different regions of Queensland, the most famous being the Ekka People’s Day public holiday in Brisbane. In 2025, this day falls on Wednesday 13 August, meaning you could turn four days of annual leave into nine days of holidays.
Where to go: If you're looking for a mid-year trip to the snow then it's the perfect time of the year to visit New Zealand. We've already done some of the long weekend in New Zealand planning for you, leaving you with five-six days to fill the gaps with your nine days of holidays.
Spring fling
Public holiday: Monday 6 October (King's Birthday) 2025 (Queensland only)
Days to take annual leave: Tuesday 7 October, Wednesday 8 October, Thursday 9 October, and Friday 10 October 2025
In Queensland, the King’s Birthday falls on 6 October, and marks the end of the school holidays. Turn four days of annual leave into a nine-day spring fling.
Where to go: Head to the South Pacific Islands and spend your time snorkelling or diving among vibrant marine life, or simply sit back, relax, and take in the stunning coastal scenery all around you.
Festive escape
Public holiday: Thursday 25 December (Christmas Day), Friday 26 December (Boxing Day) 2025 and Thursday 1 January (New Year's Day) 2026
Days to take annual leave: Monday 29 December, Tuesday 30 December, Wednesday 31 December 2025, and Friday 2 January 2026
This is your chance to turn four days of annual leave into an 11-day getaway. You may decide to visit family or loved ones… or you might get as far away from them as you can. Either way – you will have a fabulous time!
Where to go: Looking for a getaway where you need to dust off the passport? Why not escape to Singapore for a vibrant city getaway? While you’re at it, you could even stop over in Shenzhen and make the most of your 11 days off.
