Chris's Secure Connection

Dealing with everyone from frantic families’ making a last-minute dash for flights to solo globetrotters with burgeoning backpacks, Chris Hooper from Brookwater is putting the human touch into high-tech security screening at BNE. And with a knack for keeping customs lines moving, it’s no wonder his award-winning service has won over travellers worldwide.

Chris’s interest in airport security began on a trip to Singapore where a chaotic journey through customs inspired him to look into airport security jobs back home, with a view to being more friendly and efficient.

Now an Aviation Protection Officer with ISS at BNE’s International Terminal, its Chris’s job to move each and every traveller through the airport screening process securely and with ease. Whether he’s processing travel groups, passengers in wheelchairs or airline cabin crew, Chris keeps everyone safe and smiling while maintaining the airport’s strict security measures.

“I like to make sure each passenger’s experience is not only safe, but enjoyable, as they move through all the protocols we now face as travellers,” he said.

Such is Chris’s commitment to safety and service that he has received several ‘ISS HERO’ awards for his rapport with travellers. His secret, he says, is clear communication, with just a hint of his signature Kiwi humour.

“I get along with some travellers so well that I’ve had to convince a group or two that I can’t come with them on their travels — it’s often hard to say no!” he said.

During Chris’s four years with ISS he has met people from all walks of life, including some of the world’s most recognisable actors and musicians, who all have to pass through the customs’ process, regardless of their celebrity status.

“I once had a well-known heavy metal rock band flying off to Auckland for a concert and got the chance to have a laugh with them — it’s one of the best perks of the job,” Chris said.

With construction of the new runway at BNE making way for more flights to more destinations, Chris is confident his personable approach will keep international travellers safe, relaxed and grinning all the way to their gates.
